Is It Still A Good Time To Start An Online Business?
The simple answer is YES! In fact, there’s has never been a better time to start your online business empire. More and more people are looking to buy online!
Online business is actually a fairly young industry, it has only been around for 30 years. There’s still plenty of room to grow!
Is Online Business For Me?
Almost everybody who has access to the internet, regardless of demographics, technical skills or nationality can have a piece of the online world.
The fact that you have access to this article tells me that you have all you need to start your online business!
Even a 7-year-old Ryan made 11 Million a year reviewing toys on YouTube! How cool is that?
If a young boy can make it online, so can you!
All you need to know is just the steps to creating a successful online business and take MASSIVE ACTION ?
The simple formula to create a successful online business:
- Create enough content to be The Authority Figure in ANY topic.
- Build enough Followers that trust what you have to say.
- Motivate your followers to take action and make a purchase.
- Repeat step 1-3 until you’re content with your income.
Besides a low entry barrier, the internet also allows you to do much more than a traditional business.
- automate the business process
- reach out to a global audience
- scale your business quickly and easily
Without a physical limitation, there’s virtually no upper limit to the amount of profit that you can potentially make.
This is what makes online businesses so lucrative.
Step #1: Create Enough Content To Be An Authority Figure In Any Micro Industry.
First of all, it’s essential to figure out what you’d like to represent online.
The reason is that once you have picked a topic, you are expected to create hundreds of content surrounding this topic before others will consider you as the Authority Figure or the #1 man.
If you don’t identify with the topic or have no interest in it, it would be tough for you to create quality content to build a large following consistently.
Remember, it is your followings’ attention that determines your paycheck!!
How To Find A Good Direction/ Topic For Your Online Business?
Starting an online business is no different from starting a conventional offline business. To achieve success, it’s essential to have a solid reason WHY you want to be in that business.
Like any business, it takes time and effort to build a solid reputation and customer base. Online business is a long term game.
In the offline world, most businesses close down due to cashflow problems. However, in the online world, we don’t have this issue as all the tools we need will cost less than $500 a year.
Therefore the key to success is really your motivation to continue working on the business!
The best topic for your online business will be something that you have a strong emotional attachment to. For example, it can be:
- your profession
- your childhood dream
- your hobby/passion
- a problem that you’d like to solve
The good news is, you don’t necessarily need to be an expert in that area. You just need to have enough interest to continue doing research or pick up any skills related to that topic.
In my case, as a website developer, I like to teach people how to create websites! I find huge satisfaction in helping other people with my technical knowledge. Therefore, stay tuned for more web tutorials soon?
In case you’re wondering if there’s a list of topics that are easy to make money online, let me highlight that
Personal Interest Is More Important Than Money Making Ideas/Trends!!
With over 3.9 billion internet users, you can be sure that any topic has a huge potential to hit the jackpot.
Therefore, what we need to focus on is you, the Content Creator!
How I Wasted Time, Money And Effort Working On The “Perfect” Project
Being a perfectionist, I researched long and hard for the “perfect” topic where lots of people were searching for online, but not many websites talked about.
In layman term, I picked a micro-industry that has high demand, but low in supply.
I spent money buying a domain, spent hours creating the website, Facebook page, sourcing for products, thinking about business models, studying competitor websites, creating Facebook paid ads, only to give up on it 2 months down the road when I didn’t make a single sale.
There are many reasons why I gave up on that project. However, most importantly, there was no incentive beyond monetary returns that would propel me to continue working on that business. This was my biggest mistake!
My WHY wasn’t strong because I cannot relate to the business as I’m a lady venturing into big & tall men’s clothing. I hope you can avoid the same mistake I made.
Therefore, the first step is to figure out what you’re really interested in before going into all the nitty-gritty of the online business.
Figure Out How You Want To Produce Content.
Besides looking for a topic that you’re genuinely interested in, I would also like you to look deep into yourself to find out how you communicate best. In other words, what is your strength?
Do you prefer speaking or writing? Are you a visual person? Do you prefer leaving WhatsApp messages, calling people or meeting face to face? Are you an introvert or extrovert?
If you prefer speaking, you can consider recording yourself speaking and produce vlogs or any video content. You can easily distribute it on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook etc.
If you are not comfortable speaking in front of a camera, you may want to consider producing podcasts, which is in simple audio format. You can distribute them in the Apple store, Spotify etc.
If you’re a visual person, you can consider creating infographics or animated videos. You can distribute them in social media and Pinterest.
If you prefer writing, like me, you can write articles in blogs or social media to spread your message out.
Be true to yourself. Just because most people consume videos nowadays doesn’t mean that everybody will stop reading overnight!
In the online world, we focus on serving people who are similar to ourselves. Because the internet has such a vast reach, just the attention of a mere 0.1% of the population is more than enough to keep us busy.
In short, we always want to keep things simple and continuously find ways to remove friction or excuses for not creating more content for our online business.
Let’s Keep Things Simple Because Content is King.
Your content can be anything relevant to your topic as long as it brings value to other people. For example:
- How-to tutorials
- Product Reviews
- Documentary etc.
- Find a topic that you’re genuinely interested in.
- Write down WHY you want to start a business around that topic.
- Have the expectation that you will need to create hundreds of pieces of content for that topic.
- Find out how you communicate best, is it speaking, writing or drawing?
Step #2: Build Enough Followers That Trust What You Have to Say.
Find Out Who Is Interested In Your Topic?
Ideally, the easiest way to create an engaging crowd is to focus on serving people who are similar to you.
Birds of a feather flock together. Everybody is unique, but they are united by the same desire, value and goals.
As long as your brand has a consistent voice and personality, you will be able to gather a large following over time.
In today’s world, millennials love to follow brands that have integrity, depth, authenticity and a story that they can relate to.
A brand is like fashion; millennials use brands to showcase their value, vision and personality. Therefore if they are into zero-waste, for example, they are more likely to purchase from a business that supports this cause, even if it’s at a higher price point.
If you are starting from scratch, congratulations, you can focus on creating a personal brand and leverage on your personality, story, and experience to connect with others.
If you’re a stay at home parent, your audience will also be staying at home parents. If your hobby is baking, then your audience will be home bakers! It can be that simple!
Therefore, if you already have an existing brand, you might want to focus on giving your brand a personality. Make sure that your brand’s persona is consistent across all channels. Your online and offline store should provide customers with the same experience.
Faking it till you make it is not a good idea in current times. Social media makes everything transparent. It’s better to be a flawed but authentic person than a perfect but heavily scripted storyline.
Engage With Your Audience/ Followers.
Having just a large following is not enough. The most valuable asset online is your audience’s attention. You need to engage with them.
Do not ever think about buying your audience, you will end up just getting numbers, but zero engagement. The number of followers is only a number. It is the attention that matters!
Creating gifts or giveaway contests for your audience is a different story altogether.
If your audience doesn’t know you or don’t trust you, they won’t buy into your recommendations either. Relationship building is important. Online business is no different from a traditional business.
In the beginning, most of our customers are strangers. However, as time passes by, 80% of the sales we make are from existing customers.
If we serve our customers properly and continuously provide value to them, be it a solution or entertainment value, they will come to be our #1 fans and our biggest advocate.
Naturally, you will also need to reach out to your audience frequently. In the online world, it’s best if you can connect with your audience every day through social media.
Otherwise, we might be easily forgotten or replaced.
- List out the potential audiences for your niche. There can be a few segments.
- Find out where they hang out. Engage with them on a daily basis.
Step #3: Motivate Your Followers To Take Action And Make A Purchase.
How to Start Reaping The Fruits Of Your Own Online Business
Now that you’ve accumulated enough audience and followers, you have a large prospective customer base online.
They believe in you and have a high chance of purchasing anything that you recommend, as long as it’s aligned with their goals and values.
It’s vital to promote with the intention of helping your customers! If you’re promoting something just for the sake of getting more sales. Your audience will dessert you faster than you can say sorry.
Next step, you would need to figure out what kind of products and business model that you’d like to have.
If you already have your products, you can consider selling the physical product on your e-commerce store, or an e-commerce marketplace like Amazon, eBay or Lazada.
If you have an offline retail store, you can also drive your audience there.
If your product is a digital product like e-book, images, videos, audios, design templates etc, you can either sell them on your website or find a digital marketplace like ThemeForest or ShuttleStock.
If you don’t have your product or want to start small, you can always learn how to be an affiliate marketer like me.
An affiliate marketer only focuses on marketing. We promote other people’s products and take a cut from the commission after a sale is transacted.
As the actual sale is completed at our vendor’s site, we don’t need to worry about operations, customer support, fulfilment, shipping etc. We only focus on doing marketing, which is step 1 and step 2!
Finally, you can also consider doing drop-shipping. In the case of drop shipping, it’s pretty much like pre-ordering.
In drop shipping, you take in the product orders from your customers before placing an actual order with your supplier. Then, have your supplier send the products to your customer’s address.
You, therefore, make money by selling the product a little more expensive than your cost, which is your supplier’s price. In this case, you don’t need to keep any stock and don’t need to worry about shipping. You only need to take care of marketing and customer support.
The possibility is endless; it all boils down to what you prefer to do.
- Recommend products that are beneficial to your audience.
- Find out which online business model that you prefer:
- Sell physical product at:
- Your E-Commerce Store (Shopify)
- E-Commerce Marketplace (Amazon, Ebay, Lazada etc)
- Sell digital product at:
- Your website
- Digital Marketplace (ThemeForest, Envato etc)
